8 Biggest WWDC 2025 Announcements

Year‑based OS naming and Liquid Glass design

Apple is switching every platform to a year‑based numbering scheme. Instead of “iOS 19,” the next releases will be called iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26 (“Tahoe”), watchOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26. These versions are expected in fall 2025.

“Liquid Glass” Design Language

All operating systems adopt an updated interface dubbed Liquid Glass. Controls such as buttons, toggles and menus become more transparent so items like the iPhone lock‑screen clock and notifications let the wallpaper show through

iOS 26 – smarter Phone and on‑device translation

Apple overhauls the Phone app, merging Favorites, Recents and Voicemail into a single view. A live‑translation feature is built directly into Messages, FaceTime and phone calls, translating conversations on‑device and in real time. The AI‑powered “Visual Intelligence” now scans what is on‑screen and lets you act on detected objects or text. Apple also introduces a new “Games” app that gathers Game Center, Apple Arcade titles and your personal library in one hub.

iPadOS 26 – true multitasking at last

New multitasking and window tools boost productivity on iPad. Apps can be freely resized and placed anywhere, with multiple windows open side by side. A system‑wide ribbon, similar to a menu bar, offers quick access to app functions, and iPadOS gains its first Preview app for viewing or annotating images and files. These changes make the iPad feel even more like a laptop.

MacOS 26 “Tahoe” – power user upgrades

The Mac also receives the transparent Liquid Glass look plus several new tricks. Spotlight is greatly expanded and gains Quick Keys for faster actions and richer search filters. For the first time, a full Phone app arrives on Mac, complete with call screening and callback reminders. The iPhone’s Journal app is also coming to both Mac and iPad.

WatchOS 26 – AI in your workout

Apple Watch gets watchOS 26 with the Liquid Glass aesthetic and extra features. An AI‑driven “Workout Buddy” acts as a personal trainer, giving real‑time feedback during exercise. A new wrist‑twist gesture lets you dismiss incoming notifications instantly. An official Notes app finally lands on Apple Watch, allowing notes to be viewed and edited.

VisionOS 26 â€“ upgrades for Vision Pro

Apple’s Vision Pro headset receives multiple updates in visionOS 26. It gains support for PlayStation VR2 controllers, widening the pool of VR games. Spatial widgets debut, and the rendering of virtual avatars (“Personas”) is refined to make the mixed‑reality interface more useful and personal.

Apple Intelligence and AI strategy

Apple is expanding its on‑device AI features known as Apple Intelligence. A key step is the Foundation Models Framework, which lets third‑party developers embed Apple’s large language models directly in their apps on the device. Many new functions—such as the live translation mentioned above—run entirely on‑device, preserving user privacy. Visual Intelligence can now understand on‑screen content and automatically detect objects or text. In the creative Image Playground app, users can generate various image styles via ChatGPT by sending a description to ChatGPT and receiving a matching image; this feature requires explicit user consent.
